Chapter Thirty-Three
This chase scene is finally where I got to use all those pictures I took of Friday Harbor. If you don’t recall, when I went on my fact-finding vacation up to San Juan Island, I took pictures of just about everything in the entire town—literally. I walked the town, stopping about every fifty feet to snap a picture. I have several hundred photos of sidewalks, streets, and houses. Obsessive? Yes. Useful? Not really. It would be really boring in a chase scene to say “I turned left at the red-brick bookshop, flew past three bungalow-style homes—one with a wooden windchime—and glanced at the Lutheran Church’s strange rock garden.” However, you can rest assured that what little I do use in the book is 100% accurate.
Here are some excerpts, with pictures to match.
“The road came to a T, the left leading through town toward the ferry, and the right leading to I didn’t know where. I slowed just enough to not die, and turned right.”
This shot is actually looking from the T back the direction they're coming from.
“I took a left on Park Street, which turned out to be just as straight and open as the last, and with fewer trees. I looked for side alleys, but everything was gravel and dirt, and I didn’t want to risk riding through mud.”
“We flew past the small island high school, and turned right past the post office. The marina was close. Felix was a hundred yards behind us when I turned.”
“One block before Front Street I pulled the motorcycle to a stop. I was illegally parked, but couldn’t have cared less. I helped Rebekah down, and she took my arm was we walked quickly away. There was a narrow alley between two stores, an art gallery and a restaurant, and we limped as best we could… At the end of the alley was a long set of stairs. Rebekah took one at a time, trying hard not to show the pain on her face as she moved her bleeding leg.”
