Chapter Thirty
To be perfectly honest, I had mountains of trouble with the time change, flying from Paris to Seattle. If the timing here all feels a little vague it’s because I just kept screwing things up and eventually got tired of trying. (But kids: stay in school!)

The conversation about Nicole is pretty all we hear about her background. In Tangled Web, Nicole was actually a bigger character than Rebekah, and the book focused a great deal on her redemption. However, I eventually realized that Rebekah is way more important than Nicole, and that I was a moron for having written it that other way. So it all changed. But Nicole has a long, detailed background. At some points in my outlining she’s been legitimately bad, and in other revisions she’s been good but blackmailed. In this version, she leans more toward the good (sorry for the spoiler) but the main life-changing event for her—shooting a cop—very possibly never happened. In some versions she actually did it, in other versions she did it accidentally, in yet others the gun discharged and Felix told her that she’d killed a cop. Regardless, in this version she’s repentant for whatever she’s done.

There’s a little bit of conversation with her here that I really like, while Eric is trying to find some way to escape. The final page of the chapter, she lets on that she’s thought about turning herself in before, but that she’s scared to death of Felix. Nicole doesn’t get a lot of dialogue, but I think the few lines she says here reveal a lot about who she really is.
