General Notes:

This book went through fourteen rewrites before it was ever submitted to Covenant, and then was completely rewritten once it got there. Consequently, a huge number of things from the original are gone, replaced with a huge number of new ideas I’d never dreamt of while writing Wake Me When It’s Over.

In this Goodies Section, I plan to go through the book chapter-by-chapter, offering trivia and background, explaining why I made some of the choices I made, and inserting the occasional deleted scene.

With that in mind, it kind of goes without saying that this Goodies Section is going to be FULL OF SPOILERS. By which I mean, if you haven’t read the book yet, don’t read the goodies section. In fact, if you’re partway through the book, don’t read the goodies section. Read the goodies when you’re done. (Or, do whatever you want. But don’t blame me when you find out prematurely about Eric's leukemia, Rebekah's enraged vendetta against Big Oil, and Felix's secret past as a shoe shine boy.)

In the goodies I’ll refer to a few major versions of the book: Watermark, Tangled Web, and The Counterfeit. There were more rewrites, as I mentioned before, but they were all variations on one of these three plots. Here’s a brief explanation of them, just for your reference later:

Watermark: this was the first incarnation of the book, back when I was still planning on a three-book series, rather than two books. Watermark had two main point-of-view characters, Eric Hopkins and his roommate Baxter. (It was planned that the third book would add Davis, the last roommate, as a POV character as well.)

Tangled Web is the version of the story that was originally submitted to the publisher in summer of 2005. It is similar to The Counterfeit up until about chapter ten. I’m toying with the idea of posting this entire manuscript on this site in the near future, probably as a downloadable PDF. I’ll keep you updated on the status of this.

The Counterfeit, of course, is the final published version. In the goodies section, all page numbers and chapter references will refer to this version.
