All (?) of my High School Dance Photos

10 Comments 09 February 2013

In my Countdown To Feb 12th, I’ve been showing a lot of embarrassing photos on Twitter. And what could be more embarrassing than a collection of all my dance photos from high school? (I think there are two dances missing from this collection. Not sure where those photos are.)

Morp my junior year. Yes, I went in shorts.

Sadie Hawkins my junior year. For this dance, no one was paired off: it was a group of five girls who asked a group of five guys. Kind of weird.

Junior prom my junior year. My favorite part of this photo: look how THRILLED my date is to be in this picture. :)

Homecoming my senior year. True story: my date was in a car crash on the way to respond to my invitation, and she hasn’t driven a car since.

Homecoming my senior year. May I point out I’m the only one in a tux. May I also point out my tie and cummerbund are METALLIC PINK.

Christmas Dance, senior year. Again: a stylish tux.

Christmas dance, senior year. This is notable for being the Three Amigos: these were the guys I hung out with all senior year, and even worked with (at a crappy bakery job).

Junior Prom, senior year. This one is a weird one. I asked out this girl who I hardly knew who didn’t even go to our school or live in our city. She must have thought it was very odd. But I liked her.

Junior Prom, senior year. In case the photo’s not clear, we’re all checking our appearance in a compact.

Senior prom, senior year. May I just say: look at that stylish outfit. (This dance was supposed to be centennial based, because it was the 100 year anniversary of Utah becoming a state. But I think I was the only one who took it seriously.) (I was also the only one who worked at a theater and had access to a lot of costumes.)

Senior Prom, senior year. I don’t know how I ended up in this group; I don’t know half the people. Still: awesome suit.

My First Work of Fiction Ever

I’ve often said that I didn’t start out as a writer–that I didn’t like English or reading or writing until after high school. But! There’s an exception. Before I had gained my dislike of all these things, when I was at the ripe old age of three, I wrote the following story in my Beatrix Potter diary. (Well, I dictated, and my mother wrote it down.) Here is that story in its entirety.

October 1, 1981

A play. It’s called “The Lion Went Off to Eat The Bird.” The hunters were trying to kill the lion, but the lion hided and the hunters shooted the bird. The lion hided because he didn’t want to get shooted. Hop Bunny Rabbit wants to eat the lion with one big bite. The bunny rabbit eated himself. And then the tiger jumps so high over his cave and lands splash in the water. The End. And it’s a play that needs costumes with Tweety Bird and Lion.

Where the Magic(?) Happens, Part 2

So, about a year ago I posted pictures of what my office looks like, but I have since moved and I now rent an office in a suite full of lawyers. Consequently, this office looks moderately more professional. But only moderately.

Look at how professional the hallway seems! This is a place where people get stuff done! (Sue people.)

The view into my professional looking office. Those blinds don’t open (they’re broken), but that’s okay because I live an hermitic life where I hide from the sun. Usually the lights are turned off, too.

The couch, which is arguably the most important part of the office. You’ll also note my blanket. It’s not my real security blanket (on which there are pictures of rabbits playing football), but it’s my more professional office one.

My Christmas present from my wife: a framed Mark Rothko (the one I saw in person at the MoMA!)

My bulletin boards. I’m a very visual thinker, so I always have big bulletin boards on which my stories are mapped out. On this one, the left board has photos of all my characters (even the very minor characters), and postcards of the Grand Canyon (because part of the book takes place there). On the left side is maps and genealogy charts and plot outlines. Also, I have a $3 Walmart calendar with pictures of castles.

And then my computer. Not much to say about this except that I still insist on living in the land of PCs.

My Geeky Hobbies: Warmachine

This is probably of little interest to most of my readers, but a couple authors (Dan Wells, Larry Correia, Howard Tayler) and I play the wargame Warmachine, and I’ve been meaning to send them pictures of my painted miniatures. The traditional color scheme for this army is white and pink, which looks terrible. I did mine in red, black, and gold. (Apologies for the poor lighting.)

My favorite part: on these last guys, the spells on their scrolls are Traguna, Makoidies, Tracorum, Sadis, Di, which is the spell from Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
