I don't think so. Although it was written, originally, with the intent to poke fun at the genre, I think that it is a sturdy enough plot that it would stand on it's own, even if the humor was removed.
It was originally planned as three, but it has since been shortened to two. Due to the state of the market, stand-alone books seem to do better than series. With a straight sequel, I could make it both carry over, but also work for first-time readers. I couldn't find a way to do that with three books.
