256 people responded to this poll, which is the biggest group yet. For those of you who took it, you’ll know that there were a lot of options to choose from. I only chose to show the top ten results in each category, because the charts were getting unwieldy. (So if your choice doesn’t show up, know that it wasn’t in the top ten.)
Not surprising, Doctor Who and Firefly fared very well in this poll. But there were a few surprises, too. The results are below.

This is upsetting. So many people are WRONG. Or voted for their favorite, not the best. I hate it when I start a Monday with humanity failing me. Zoe as the best engineer? Are you kidding me? Only the recognition of Spock as the best first officer saves this for me.
And by Zoe I meant Kaylee.
I think you have to take personality into account, too, though. Because you’re spending a long time traveling through the deadness of space: it’d be nice to have Kaylee around. Same with Wash: he’s not the best pilot, probably, but he’d be the most fun to hang out with.
That said, I voted for Scotty.
I agree, Melanie. Sure, Kaylee can keep Serenity running, and looks pretty good in a froofy dress, but Gyro Gearloose can turn a bathtub into a time machine. Who doesn’t want a time machine?
I voted for Scotty too. And I wouldn’t want to hang out with Kaylee. She’s nice, but she’d wear on my nerves pretty quickly. You KNOW Scotty would have better stories, so he wins two ways.
What I can’t believe is that Bean didn’t win!
I mean, I know that there’s no movie about him so people aren’t as emotionally invested. But Bean could out strategize, out think, and out fight Spock any day.
But then, there is I suppose the point, people will pick who they like because this would involve spending time with the person… In that respect Spock wins, he’s nicer and more likable than Bean. (Though not by much)
Yes! Bean would have been a bit annoying to have around maybe, but he get you through ANYTHING!
I couldn’t have Zoe without Wash. Besides, he has little toys and stuff. And obviously it’s the David Tennent doctor.
And bless Kaylee’s little heart, but I have to agree with Melanie. She would drive me nuts. Vin Diesel fixes cars on the Fast and the Furious. He could keep the Firefly running smoothly.

Agreed, Scotty can keep it working or patch around it, Kaylee needs the right part.
Then again, we know why everyone things he’s a miracle worker, right?
You don’t tell them how long it really takes or how much it can really do, you tell them you can make it fast enough, or it can do enough. Good engineers ALWAYs have a reserve.

Captain – Ramius. Mal is cool, but I don’t see him as much of a mentor anymore and I’ve got to think long term. Ramius can train his eventual replacement. And he outsmarted TWO complete navies.
1st Officer – Lots of good options.
Engineer – It’s not just about keeping things running, this is also about inventing new things to solve unexpected problems. Considering most tech in the Star Trek universe is based on Scotty’s theories and designs, how can you not pick him?
Science – Ok, I’m not a Dr Who fan so I can’t say he’s a bad choice. But if you’re going for research, Stark and Reed Richards are the only other options. And personally I’d rather put up with Tony’s partying that Richards’ elitism.
Medical – I can only assume Elixir didn’t get many votes because he’s not well-known. Seriously, the kid can manipulate biological material at the molecular level.
Comms – Yeah, 3P0 might have the best communication skillset, but really do you want to put up with the whining? Maybe I’m nostalgic for GI Joe, but Breaker was way cooler and had the funs toys. At the very least, Uhura means a fun person who also excels at her job.
Security – Thor, absolutely. No one will push him around, and he’s far from stupid ( except falling for Loki’s illusions. )
Pilot – Any decent pilot can excel with a state-of-the-art ship. Truly skilled pilots excel with sub-par equipment. And since Han isn’t listed as a choice, I’ll take Papa Bear Baloo. Did you see what he could do with his old prop-job?
Ship – Yeah, the TARDIS has everything you’ll ever need on the inside. No doubt.
That said, it’s hard to choose against the Improbability Drive.
They need to make this movie. I need to see it.
Kaylee was the obvious choice for me for engineer. She has the most natural talent and enthusiasm for her job. Scotty might do great things but he doesn’t spend all his spare time talking and thinking and relating to his ship. Kaylee doesn’t just have great engineering skills, she is an engineer from her heart more than anyone else on the list.
Also, I’m disappointed my ship choice didn’t even make the top ten. Farscape’s living ship seems by far the most interesting to me. Plus, I want to live in a world where muppets really exist.
