My Life

The Great New Mexico Road Trip, Day Two

3 Comments 07 October 2012

Today I took the long route, ultimately heading from Cortez, Colorado, to Albuquerque, NM. But I made a detour through Chama and Santa Fe. Chama is one of those towns I keep threatening to retire to, and Santa Fe is just awesome.

The view from my hotel room in Mesa Verde Lodge.

I got up early and was the first person down to the Spruce Tree House cliff dwelling. While not the biggest, it’s the best preserved ruin at Mesa Verde.

The same ruin from the other direction.

The train station at Chama for the Cumbres & Toltec railway.

Some of the historic structures on the railway.

One of the old engines.

Santa Fe, the Palace of the Governors. One thing I LOVE about New Mexico is how old it is. This building was built in 1610. Think about that. 1610! Crazy.

The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

Cool pictures, Rob! I love those old missions and ruins. There’s something really beautiful about the desert country, too.
I’m glad your trip is going so well.

Mesa Verde is awesome! Holy cow, it just got put on my ‘next trip to NM list.’ And I love, love, love Santa Fe. I could live there, unless you moved there, then I’d have t leave. You can have Chama.
